Marko Merikko: Engineering adventure – from Finland to California

“Customer project work is exciting, as sometimes tasks form on the fly and there is variety in the work days”, says Marko Merikko, who works as a Documentation Specialist in Etteplan’s Technical Communication Solutions service area. “I had been working with the same customer already for some time when the opportunity arose to spend a few months at the customer site in California. I was immediately interested, even though the requirements weren’t crystal clear to begin with”, Marko says.

Getting all the paperwork, permits, and visas in order was no minor feat. Fortunately for Marko, these practicalities were arranged in cooperation by Etteplan and the customer organization. He ended up spending six months in a charming, cozy town in California, returning home in February 2024 with lifelong memories and experiences. He fondly remembers working in a great company, making connections, meeting new people, and exploring the town and its surrounding areas. Christmas under the California sun was surely jolly and a very different experience compared to the dark, dreary Finnish winter.

“Working at the customer's premises in California was an enriching experience, both personally and professionally. Collaborating with a diverse team from different backgrounds and cultures was rewarding. Beyond work, I had the chance to explore California, visit iconic landmarks such as Las Vegas, and make new friends. The experience was so impactful that I plan to return for my holiday there”, Marko says happily.

Marko joined Etteplan in Turku, Finland in 2020 as a Documentation Specialist in the Technical Communication Solutions service area. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Turku University of Applied Science. His degree required some studies to be completed abroad, which led him to achieve a double degree after completing studies in Germany.

A positive experience in Germany may have sparked Marko’s interest in expanding his professional horizons and enriching his personal journey abroad. He had noted the possibility of an international assignment early on during one of his development discussions with his manager at Etteplan.

“I am very grateful for the opportunities and assignments I have had, even though I don’t have an extensive years-long career history yet. Such opportunities have definitely been a big plus about working at Etteplan. I’m happy about the experience and all the learnings I’ve been able to bring to my current role after returning to Finland”, Marko concludes.
