Etteplan's collaboration with Myrskylä, Lapinjärvi, and Pukkila strengthens municipalities’ climate work
Technology service company Etteplan, in cooperation with the municipalities of Myrskylä, Lapinjärvi, and Pukkila, has developed climate plans in accordance with the climate act. The collaboration started at the beginning of 2024 and aimed to advance the municipalities' climate efforts. The project has assessed the current state of climate work in the municipalities, set ambitious climate goals, and created scenarios and action plans for reducing emissions and strengthening carbon sinks.
"We are very pleased with the collaboration, which has provided concrete tools for achieving the municipalities' climate goals. With the support of Etteplan, we have been able to create strategically important plans and a clear roadmap for promoting sustainable development at the local level, " says Esa Ukkola, the municipal manager of Myrskylä.
With the support of Etteplan and experts from the Finnish Environment Institute, the climate plans aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and promote the use of renewable energy sources. The plans include emission reduction measures and ideas for enhancing carbon sinks.
Focus on residents’ engagement and expert support
During the project, residents and other stakeholders had the opportunity to participate in the planning of climate actions and plans. Stakeholder surveys and events allowed residents to share their views and wishes about climate actions. Through an engaging approach, the municipalities have been able to ensure that the climate plans meet the residents’ local needs and expectations.
"The climate plans prepared in cooperation between the municipalities represent a significant step towards a more sustainable future. The project, funded by the Ministry of the Environment, has provided the necessary resources and expertise for developing the climate plans. The collaboration highlights our commitment to combating climate change and promoting sustainable development. We hope that these plans will serve as an example and inspiration for other municipalities and organizations as well, " says Jarkko Sorvanto, the mayor of Lapinjärvi.
The project also included extensive background research, analyzing emission trends from 1990 to the present and assessing the current state of the municipalities' carbon sinks. This situational picture provides valuable information for tracking emission reductions and the achievement of climate goals.
Support for a sustainable future
The climate plans provide municipalities with clear actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and promote the use of renewable energy sources. The municipal boards have approved the proposed plans, which will be presented for approval to the municipal councils by the end of 2024. Implementation of the plans will begin in early 2025.
"Legislation and various social factors, as well as changes in them, shape the municipal climate work. Achieving emission reduction targets requires collaboration with various stakeholders, such as organizations, entrepreneurs, and residents. The municipality, in turn, acts as an enabler of sustainable measures by promoting, for example, sustainable mobility and communicating effectively, " says Ilkka Fritius, the administrative director of Pukkila.
Etteplan supports municipalities and public entities in promoting climate and sustainability issues
"Etteplan offers extensive expertise to support climate and sustainability efforts. In addition to standard-compliant carbon footprint calculations, we are happy to assist with studies related to renewable energy, climate change adaptation, and broader environmental impact management. We serve both small and large entities in the private and public sectors, " emphasizes Antti Niskanen, project lead from Etteplan.
