Etteplan to design wave energy testing facility for AW-Energy

Press release – Published: 23.08.2013 9:05:00

AW-Energy Oy has commissioned Etteplan to handle the engineering design for a testing facility for its patented WaveRoller technology. The WaveRoller converts the surge phenomenon that takes place on the shoreline into electrical energy. Finnish-based AW-Energy is a world-leading company in the development of wave energy.

Etteplan will be in charge of the engineering for the entire testing facility, including electrical, automation, mechanical, hydraulics and HVAC, as well as technical calculations. AW-Energy’s new facility has many benefits: it allows long-term testing of wave energy units to recreate realistic conditions. This makes it possible to test extreme waves, in which substantial mechanical energy results in major electrical power.

“Construction of the new testing facility is a natural step towards industrializing WaveRoller technology, and it complements our pilot power plant in Portugal. We chose Etteplan as our engineering partner because with them we can get all the know-how we need from one place. In addition, Etteplan has extensive experience in developing technology based on renewable forms of energy, ” says Petri Liukkonen, AW-Energy’s Vice President, Industrialization.

“Engineering this testing facility is significant recognition of Etteplan’s technology competence and ability to deliver complete solutions. In addition, we are extremely proud to be part of developing top-notch Finnish environmental technology and bringing it to the world stage, ” says Iiro Aalto, Regional Manager from Etteplan.
